About the YAE

Since 2007 the European Research Council (ERC) has been supporting excellent young scientists in Europe by awarding them ERC Starting Grants under the motto “Supporting the next generation of research leaders in Europe”. In this context, the ERC has also manifested its support to the Young Academy of Europe (YAE) as a bottom-up initiative of a dynamic and innovative group of recognized European young scientists with outspoken views about science and science policy.

The Young Academy of Europe wishes to

  • Provide input and feedback on aspects of doing science in Europe, with all its facets, from a “younger” perspective, in particular to the ERC;
  • Involve top young scientists in the future European research strategy such as Long Range Plans and ESF Roadmaps;
  • Support other young scientists in Europe in their further development and in thinking strategically about the future of their own discipline;
  • Create and foster a network of top young researchers across the disciplines in Europe.

The YAE shares the objective of the ERC to widen participation across Europe and across the research domains.

Academia Europaea

History

Following meetings of ERC Starting Grant grantholders in 2010 and 2011 at the national level, a kick-off meeting with 11 ERC grantholders from various member states was held in Paris in September 2011. At this meeting, possible routes towards establishing a Young Academy of Europe were discussed, and its aims and activities were defined.

Since then, the YAE has been consolidating, and in 2012 initiated together with the Academia Europaea (AE) discussions about a close future association, which is still contingent upon final approval by the AE. The Young Academy of Europe was formally established as an independent association of top young researchers in Europe at a constitutive annual meeting held in Brussels on 7/8 December 2012.
